I’d been talking to Lily for a week before we went out to a fancy steakhouse she chose. She looked amazing—but barely paid attention to me, glued to her phone the whole time, ordering expensive food without even engaging in conversation. The waitress, Emily, noticed and quietly checked if I was okay. I admitted the date was a disaster. She offered to “help,” and before I knew it, the bill came—with my card supposedly declined. Lily didn’t hesitate—she got annoyed, grabbed her purse, and walked out, never coming back. Then Emily returned, smiling, and showed me the real bill: $0. She’d comped the meal and helped me dodge being used. We laughed, and she suggested I could repay her with a drink—this time with someone who actually wanted to be there. I agreed. Because sometimes, a terrible date leads to something unexpectedly better.
