At fourteen, I\u2019d earned a full scholarship to an elite prep school. My parents barely noticed, too consumed with my brother\u2019s problems and my father\u2019s gambling debts. My grandparents were the only ones who truly saw me. Before they died, they promised the cabin would be mine\u2014and made sure of it.<\/p>\n

At seventeen, I worked with a lawyer to prepare a trust. The night of my eighteenth birthday, while my family celebrated what they believed was their opportunity, I finalized the deed transfer. By morning, the cabin legally belonged to me alone.<\/p>\n
