When we arrived, his parents, Martha and Arthur, welcomed us warmly. The house smelled of garlic and dinner was already laid out. As I sat down, my boyfriend joked loudly that I\u2019d better have brought my wallet because dinner would be expensive. I panicked for a second\u2014until Arthur laughed and said they were only teasing and that the only \u201cpayment\u201d they expected was a good appetite and sense of humor.<\/p>\n

Everyone laughed, and my boyfriend whispered that playful teasing was their way of welcoming people. The tension melted. During dinner, Martha asked thoughtful questions about my life while Arthur entertained us with funny family stories\u2014especially one about my boyfriend burning pasta in college.
