Last week I took my grandchildren out to dinner. Before the food arrived, my six-year-old grandson asked, \u201cGrandpa, can I say grace?\u201d I told him of course.<\/p>\n
He folded his hands and prayed:<\/p>\n
\u201cGod is good, God is great. Thank you for the food\u2026 and I\u2019d thank you even more if Grandpa gets us ice cream for dessert. And liberty and justice for all. Amen.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nearby tables chuckled at his innocence, but one woman muttered loudly, \u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s wrong with kids today. Asking God for ice cream!\u201d<\/p>\n
My grandson\u2019s face fell. With tears in his eyes he asked me, \u201cDid I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?\u201d<\/p>\n
Before I could answer, an elderly man from another table walked over. He smiled and told my grandson, \u201cI\u2019m sure God loved that prayer.\u201d Then he whispered with a wink, \u201cToo bad that lady never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the end of dinner, I bought the kids ice cream. My grandson looked at his sundae for a moment, then walked over to the woman who had criticized him and set it in front of her.<\/p>\n
\u201cHere, this is for you,\u201d he said politely.<\/p>\n
Then he added, \u201cYou can shove it up your ass, you grouchy old b*tch.\u201d<\/p>\n
The entire restaurant went silent.<\/p>\n
That moment reminded me of another story about the difference between grandmothers and grandfathers.<\/p>\n
A friend of mine used to take his seven-year-old granddaughter for a Sunday drive each week. One day he was sick, so Grandma took her instead.<\/p>\n
When they returned, the girl ran upstairs to her grandfather.<\/p>\n
\u201cDid you enjoy your ride?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh yes, Papa!\u201d she said. \u201cAnd guess what? We didn\u2019t see a single a–hole, stupid basta–, or dumb sh– anywhere!\u201d<\/p>\n
