My son appeared on the stairs, watching.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t get to leave someone\u2019s life and come back when it\u2019s convenient,\u201d I told them. \u201cYou don\u2019t skip the hard parts and show up for the results.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re still your parents,\u201d my father said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m still the daughter you left.\u201d<\/p>\n

That ended it.<\/p>\n

I opened the door. \u201cYou should go.\u201d<\/p>\n

They hesitated\u2014but eventually, they left.<\/p>\n

This time, I didn\u2019t stop them.<\/p>\n

When the door closed, my son asked, \u201cWho were they?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him\u2014at the life I had fought for.<\/p>\n

And the house returned to peace.<\/p>\n
