While my driveway was being repaired, I legally parked my old Honda in front of my neighbor Richard’s house. He demanded that I move it because it blocked the view of his expensive new fountain.

I refused, and the next morning, my car was covered in eggs. Richard proudly admitted doing it, insulted my car, and mocked the lisp I’d had since childhood.

Instead of arguing, I sent him a copy of a $5,000 check I had written to his late wife, Susan, nearly 20 years earlier.

Susan, my best friend, had borrowed my savings to help Richard launch the business that made him wealthy. She died before fully repaying me, but I never asked Richard for the remaining money.

That night, Richard approached my car carrying paint. I switched on the lights and sprinklers as several neighbors stepped forward to witness everything.

During the confrontation, Richard admitted he had blamed me for Susan leaving him. I explained that she left because he cared more about money than their marriage—and I had only supported her when she needed help.

“You mocked my cheap car,” I told him, “while showing off a fountain paid for by the business my savings helped create.”

The next morning, an envelope appeared under my door containing $186.40—the exact cost of cleaning my car.

Richard never apologized, but he never touched my Honda again.
