Found across parts of the southern United States, kissing bugs may shelter near porches, in outdoor debris, or occasionally inside homes. Some carry Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease. Transmission usually happens when infected bug feces enter a bite wound, broken skin, or the eyes or mouth—not through the bite itself. Many bites do not result in infection.

Symptoms can include fever, headache, fatigue, rash, or vomiting, while some infections cause no noticeable early symptoms. Untreated infection can eventually cause serious heart or digestive problems in some people. Reduce exposure by clearing debris, sealing cracks, repairing screens, and keeping pet sleeping areas clean. If you suspect exposure, contact a healthcare professional about evaluation and testing. Early treatment matters, and recognizing a possible risk is more useful than panic.

Kissing bugs are blood-feeding members of the assassin bug family; most other assassin bugs hunt insects rather than feed on people.
