For the first three years of my marriage, I was the outsider in Mark\u2019s picture-perfect family. I didn\u2019t come from wealth or prestige\u2014just packed tuna sandwiches and worked as a teacher. His parents never saw me as worthy of their son.<\/p>\n

His parents had invited Ashley\u2014his ex\u2014to \u201creconnect,\u201d thinking she\u2019d be a better fit for his new status. They lied to her, too, saying Mark and I were separated.<\/p>\n Mark lost it. \u201cGet out of our house,\u201d he yelled. \u201cYou don\u2019t get to decide who\u2019s right for me.\u201d<\/p>\n After they left, Mark apologized, devastated. \u201cYou\u2019ve always been enough. They\u2019ll never come between us again.\u201d<\/p>\n A week later, Ashley sent a sincere apology. She hadn\u2019t known the truth. As for the spa trip\u2014Mark rebooked it. For both of us.<\/p>\n On the road again, I felt peace. Not because Mark had succeeded\u2014but because, when it mattered, he chose me.<\/p>\n I stopped trying to prove myself to people who never wanted to see me.
