She scolded him, then came to our table and told us to stop signing\u2014calling it distracting, even \u201caggressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could respond, James, a waiter and ally, stepped in. Calm and firm, he told the woman we had every right to communicate however we needed, and that the real disturbance was her prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>The woman left in a fury, but not before her son came back, signed \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d and asked to learn the word \u201cfriend.\u201d Maya showed him, and he signed it back with pride.<\/p>\n<p>That small moment\u2014his curiosity, kindness, and courage\u2014meant everything.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed, we signed, we laughed.
