I looked at my daughter and saw past her nerves to the confident young woman she was becoming. She belonged here.<\/p>\n

“Remember what your mom used to say?”<\/em> I whispered. “You can\u2019t control what others think, but you can control how you show up.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Whispers followed us.
\n“Is that Grace with her dad?”<\/em>
\n“So weird.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Tanner spotted us and smirked. “Looks like Grace brought her bodyguard.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Grace tensed beside me.
\n“Don\u2019t let them steal your moment,”<\/em> I said.<\/p>\n

“Maybe we should just\u2014”<\/em> she started.<\/p>\n

“Dance with me,”<\/em> I offered.<\/p>\n

“Here? Everyone\u2019s watching.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Good. Let them.”<\/em><\/p>\n

As we danced alone, Grace slowly relaxed.
\n“Know what I see?”<\/em> I asked.
\n“Kids too scared to be themselves. But not you, Grace.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Something shifted\u2014her smile, the glow in her eyes\u2014and others joined us. Soon, the floor was full of students laughing and dancing.<\/p>\n

Tanner and his friends stood off to the side, their mockery drowned out by joy and connection.<\/p>\n

“Dad,”<\/em> Grace whispered, “look around.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“This is what happens when you\u2019re brave enough to take up space,”<\/em> I said.<\/p>\n

When the song ended, Grace kept dancing\u2014with classmates, with confidence. I saw her shine.<\/p>\n

Driving home, she dozed in her blue dress. For once, she saw herself clearly\u2014not just as the girl without a designer dress, but as someone strong and radiant.<\/p>\n

I still wish she could see herself the way I do. She\u2019d never doubt again.<\/p>\n
