Ethel sighs. \u201cFather\u2026 last night I went out with a 22-year-old man.\u201d<\/p>\n

The priest freezes.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe took me to dinner. Candlelight. Dancing. Laughing. Then we went back to his place.\u201d<\/p>\n

The priest whispers, \u201cDid something inappropriate happen?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh yes,\u201d Ethel says proudly. \u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen was your last confession?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n

\u201c1956.\u201d<\/p>\n

Relieved, the priest says, \u201cThen let\u2019s start from the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh no,\u201d Ethel replies. \u201cI don\u2019t need forgiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why are you here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted someone to brag to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

The priest asks, \u201cAny regrets?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hopeful, he leans in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI should\u2019ve worn my good perfume.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethel stands to leave. \u201cAnd Father\u2014if you hear rumors about me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

She winks. \u201cBelieve them.\u201d<\/p>\n
