I\u2019m Brynn, 18. My dad, Cal, cleans my high school. That made me a punchline\u2014\u201cMop Princess,\u201d \u201cTrash Baby.\u201d I laughed along and slowly erased him from my life, even though he never stopped showing up for me.<\/p>\n

Senior year, I learned he\u2019d been staying late for free<\/strong> to help set up prom. That night, I found him budgeting for a dress he wasn\u2019t sure I\u2019d even wear. I decided to go.<\/p>\n

At prom, whispers followed me in. Then I saw my dad\u2014still working, trash bag in hand\u2014and someone sneered, \u201cWhy is he here?\u201d<\/p>\n

Something snapped.<\/p>\n

I took the mic and said eight words:
\u201cHe\u2019s been here every night this week. For free.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
