\u201cShe still doesn\u2019t know, does she? About the baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart stopped.<\/p>\n

My father-in-law laughed. \u201cNo. Luis promised not to tell her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe can\u2019t know the truth yet,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd I\u2019m sure it won\u2019t be considered a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n

For three years, I\u2019d let my husband\u2019s family believe I didn\u2019t understand Spanish. I\u2019d endured comments about my body, my cooking, my parenting. I stayed quiet.<\/p>\n
