Helen was buttoning up her coat for her husband\u2019s funeral when her grandson, Lucas, burst into the garage, white as a sheet.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandma, don\u2019t start the car. Please.\u201d
His voice was raw, terrified.<\/p>\n

She froze, the key inches from the ignition.
\u201cLucas\u2026 what\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

He grabbed her hand so tightly it shook.
\u201cJust trust me. We have to walk.\u201d<\/p>\n

As they stepped out into the cold morning, Helen\u2019s phone buzzed nonstop \u2014 Anna, then David, call after call.
\u201cDon\u2019t answer,\u201d Lucas begged.<\/p>\n

And then she felt it \u2014 a sharp, icy certainty that something terrible had almost happened in that garage.<\/p>\n

By the time they reached a quiet plaza, Lucas finally spoke.
\u201cGrandma\u2026 I found a rag in your exhaust pipe this morning. Stuffed in tight. If you\u2019d started the engine with the garage door closed\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Helen\u2019s breath caught. \u201cSomeone wanted me to\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded.
\u201cNot make it to the funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mind raced. Only a few people had access to the garage: Anna, David, Laura\u2026 and Lucas.<\/p>\n

And then he told her the rest.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d overheard Anna and David arguing the night before \u2014 about life insurance, inheritance papers she was supposed to sign\u00a0today<\/em>, and how \u201cthings would be easier\u201d if she cooperated.
\u201cAnd if not,\u201d Lucas whispered, \u201cthey had a plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the funeral, her children masked their anger with forced sympathy.
\u201cMom, we need you to sign the documents today,\u201d Anna insisted.
David added, \u201cIt\u2019s routine. Just trust us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helen stood straighter, Lucas beside her like a shield.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll sign nothing without my lawyer,\u201d she said calmly.
\u201cAnd the police will be visiting the garage.\u201d<\/p>\n

The color drained from their faces.<\/p>\n

Helen turned away from them, gripping Lucas\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n

For the first time since Michael died, she felt a spark of strength.
They had tried to silence her \u2014 to erase her \u2014 but she was still here.<\/p>\n
