I brought my newborn to my daughter\u2019s school play. When the baby started crying, I stepped out. When I came back, I saw my daughter onstage searching the crowd\u2014and noticing my empty seat. I waved from the back, but she didn\u2019t wave back.<\/p>\n

That night she barely spoke. Later, in her room, she finally whispered, \u201cSince the baby came\u2026 you always step out. It feels like I don\u2019t matter anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was right, and it broke me.<\/p>\n

The next day I made her favorite breakfast. That weekend, I left the baby with my sister and took my daughter out\u2014just us. Ice cream, walks, talking. It didn\u2019t fix everything, but it helped.<\/p>\n

Weeks later, her teacher sent me a letter my daughter had written:<\/p>\n
