For years, I thought I\u2019d won the kid lottery. Frank was polite, responsible, straight A\u2019s\u2014every teacher\u2019s dream. Even while his father was dying, he stayed steady, finishing homework beside a hospital bed, promising, \u201cAll of it, Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the funeral, he became even more controlled. I mistook it for strength. If he kept his grades perfect and his room spotless, maybe our broken life would hold together.<\/p>\n

Then his teacher told me he hadn\u2019t been in class for three weeks.<\/p>\n

That night, I tested him.
\u201cHow was school?\u201d
\u201cFine,\u201d he said calmly. \u201cHistory lecture. Industrial Revolution.\u201d
The lie was smooth. Practiced.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I followed him. He didn\u2019t go to school. He rode to Oak Grove Cemetery and knelt at his father\u2019s grave.<\/p>\n

\u201cI try to go,\u201d he whispered. \u201cBut it\u2019s too loud. Everyone acts normal. I feel like I can\u2019t breathe. I\u2019m trying to be the man of the house so Mom doesn\u2019t have to cry. But I\u2019m so tired.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hidden behind a headstone, I realized his \u201cstrength\u201d was a prison built to protect me.<\/p>\n

I stepped out. \u201cFrank.\u201d<\/p>\n

When I told him I knew, the mask fell. \u201cI can\u2019t mess up,\u201d he said. \u201cYou already lost Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

I took his freezing hands. \u201cI don\u2019t need you to be solid. I need you to be fourteen. It\u2019s my job to carry this\u2014not yours.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard you crying,\u201d he admitted. \u201cI thought if I was perfect, you wouldn\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could have cried with me,\u201d I said. \u201cThat\u2019s what family does.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under the maple tree, beside his father\u2019s grave, he finally sobbed. And for the first time since the funeral, we both did.<\/p>\n

We had counseling, meetings, missed work to fix. But walking out of those gates together, I understood: while I was trying to survive, my son was trying to save me. Sometimes the strongest thing a parent can do is give their child permission to be weak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
