I\u2019m 38, mom of two. My youngest, Jax, is 16 \u2014 full-on punk: pink mohawk, piercings, leather jacket, combat boots. Loud, sarcastic, smarter than he lets on. People judge him. I just know he\u2019s a good kid.<\/p>\n

Last Friday, everything changed.<\/p>\n

It was freezing. Lily, my eldest, had gone back to college. Jax said he was \u201cgoing for a walk.\u201d Minutes later, I heard a tiny, desperate cry.<\/p>\n

I ran to the window. Jax sat on a park bench across the street, cradling a newborn in a thin, ragged blanket. Shaking. Lips blue.<\/p>\n

Jax simply said, \u201cI couldn\u2019t walk away.\u201d<\/p>\n

By Monday, the story spread. The boy with the pink mohawk, the piercings, the leather jacket \u2014 the kid people judged \u2014 had saved a life.<\/p>\n
