I ran outside barefoot, heart racing, expecting disaster. Instead, Mr. Streeter stood beside his car, shouting\u2014its front tire flat, air hissing. Scattered across the lawn lay the remains of Nick\u2019s latest snowman: carrot nose broken, stick arms buried in tire tracks, snow churned into slush.<\/p>\n

Nick stood calmly a few steps behind me. \u201cNick, what did you do?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made sure he wouldn\u2019t drive over it again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr. Streeter, red-faced, demanded, \u201cDo you know what this will cost me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Nick pointed simply: \u201cI put rocks in the bottom snowball. Dad always said cars aren\u2019t supposed to drive on lawns.\u201d<\/p>\n

The street went silent. Mr. Streeter looked at my eight-year-old, the ruined snowman, and the yard he\u2019d repeatedly cut across. Slowly, his anger softened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hid rocks?\u201d he muttered. Nick nodded. \u201cI told you before. That\u2019s our yard.\u201d<\/p>\n

I knelt beside him. \u201cSweetheart, we don\u2019t fix problems by damaging property.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d Nick said, \u201cbut talking didn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Streeter sighed, admitting he shouldn\u2019t have driven across the lawn. He promised to pay for the tire and never cross our yard again.<\/p>\n

A week later, he even brought bright orange cones and reflective tape for the snowmen. From then on, Nick\u2019s creations stood safe all winter\u2014and I learned that respect begins where someone else\u2019s space does.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
