A Fancy Restaurant, A Simple Order, and an Important Reminder

My friend had been talking about an upscale steakhouse for weeks. I told her honestly, “I can’t spend $200 on dinner. I’ll come, but I’m keeping it simple.” She said it was fine.

At the restaurant, she ordered a big steak, sides, and a drink, while I chose a simple salad and water. We enjoyed the evening until the bill arrived and she casually said, “Let’s just split it.”

Earlier, though, I had quietly arranged separate checks with the manager. When the waiter brought two receipts—one for her full meal and one for my salad—she looked surprised.

I paid my part calmly and reminded her I had mentioned my budget before. The night wasn’t really about the food—it was about boundaries. Real friends don’t create financial pressure; they listen and respect your limits.
