Family Comes First: A Lesson My Boss Will Never Forget

Yesterday I unexpectedly called off work to take my mom to urgent care after she suddenly felt unwell. In the waiting room I was worried, even though she tried to reassure me.

Then my boss texted: “I’m disappointed in you.” Another message followed saying my parents weren’t that old and his only called him in ambulance-level emergencies. It felt like he was belittling my mom’s health.

Trying to stay calm while my scared mom leaned on me, I replied:
“I’m sorry you feel that way, but my mom needed me today. Family emergencies don’t have an age requirement. I can always find another job, but I’ll never get another mom.”

Later, tests showed her condition was treatable and not life-threatening, which was a huge relief. My boss never responded, but I didn’t regret my choice.

That day reminded me: jobs are replaceable, family isn’t. If a workplace can’t understand that, it may be time to find one that does.
