ST. Legendary Baseball Hall of Famer Dies at 89

Bill Mazeroski, Hall of Fame second baseman, died Friday at 89.

He hit baseball’s first World Series walk-off home run, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a 10–9 Game 7 win over the New York Yankees in 1960.

Known for elite defense, Mazeroski won 8 Gold Gloves and was later inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Pirates called him a beloved legend and 7-time All-Star.

Born Sept 5, 1936, in Wheeling, West Virginia, he debuted in 1956 and spent 17 seasons with Pittsburgh. One of the best defensive second basemen in Major League Baseball history, he was known for quick reflexes and turning double plays.

His Oct 13, 1960 homer at Forbes Field remains the only Game 7 walk-off HR in World Series history.

Mazeroski was a 10-time All-Star, helped the Pirates win World Series titles in 1960 and 1971, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001. ⚾
