I met my fiancé, Antoine, a year ago during his exchange year in the US. We quickly fell in love, and when he proposed, I eagerly agreed. I was excited yet nervous to meet his French parents, Pierre and Marie.
They welcomed me warmly to their beautiful countryside home. Over dinner, they asked about my life, and I shared my love for nature and photography. Our conversation was easy, but when Antoine excused himself, I overheard Pierre and Marie speaking French, discussing a hidden secret about Antoine’s childhood room.
My heart raced as they mentioned a hidden object under his bed. I urged Antoine to check, and when he did, he found a locked box containing old letters and a journal written by his mother. It revealed a family secret—Antoine’s biological mother was someone else, and his parents had been hiding an inheritance from him. Shocked, I woke up in the hospital after fainting.
Antoine and I decided to keep the secret between us for now and observe his parents. As we planned our next steps, we knew the journey ahead would be challenging, but we were stronger together.
