The Sandwich Man’s Secret

Paul, a quiet coworker who always brought the same plain sandwich to work, hid a secret. When he quit, a colleague discovered children’s drawings and thank-you notes depicting a man handing out sandwiches.

Visiting the West End Library, the colleague saw Paul distributing lunch sacks to hungry children. Having grown up in foster care and often gone without food, making sandwiches wasn’t charity—it was his way to heal and help others. Inspired, the coworker joined him, and their efforts grew into a workplace tradition called “Sandwich Fridays.”

After collapsing from exhaustion, Paul recovered and founded the nonprofit One Meal Ahead, following his foster father’s advice: “Just be one meal ahead of the worst day.” His quiet dedication showed that heroism can be simple: a brown jacket, a paper bag, and a kind heart.
