I never understood how my sister and I, raised by our single mother, could be so different until we became adults. Our mom worked hard to raise us, and as I grew older, I realized how tough it was for her. We lived in a tiny, cold apartment, with little food at times. I remember our neighbor, Mrs. Jenkins, bringing us meals when we were hungry.
Mom always made sure we ate, even if it meant she went without. Over time, things improved. She found a better job, and we eventually left poverty behind, but Samira, my sister, didn’t understand the struggles we faced. She grew up carefree, expecting Mom to support her, even after college.
But when Mom’s health declined, everything changed. She told me she only had a year left. I promised to be there for her, but Samira, focused on herself, didn’t seem to care. She even tried to keep me away from Mom, accusing me of wanting her inheritance.
Despite Samira’s interference, I visited Mom regularly and helped with her treatment. Samira’s selfishness became clearer, and she spent money carelessly, leaving Mom’s finances in jeopardy. When I finally took over handling the bills, I was shocked at how much Samira had drained.
As Mom’s condition worsened, Samira stayed by her side, but her motives were obvious. When Mom passed away, Samira immediately focused on the inheritance, even before mourning. But I found out that Mom had left everything to me. She had known who truly cared and wanted to protect me, even in her final days.
Her letter confirmed it: “I can see real care and distinguish it from selfish motives. That’s why I’m leaving everything to you, Nicole.” I felt overwhelmed with gratitude, knowing that Mom’s love and wisdom would guide me in the years to come.
