When kindness said what words never could

That morning at the grocery store felt ordinary—until a small moment changed me.

An elderly woman, likely in her 80s, stood at the counter with cereal and milk, looking fragile. Seeing I had just a soda, she smiled and said, “Go ahead of me, son.”

Her kindness stayed with me. After paying, I lingered nearby. When the cashier totaled her items, I stepped in and paid. She protested, but I told her, “You already did—you paid me first with kindness.”

She looked at me, touched and surprised. We walked out together, and she encouraged me to pass it on before we parted.

I forgot the soda, but not the moment. It reminded me that kindness is simple—and it lasts.
