It began like any routine day at Southend Airport. A medical aircraft prepared to return to the Netherlands after completing a patient drop-off. On board were four people — two experienced Dutch pilots, a crew member, and a young nurse on her very first day.
It was meant to be a simple flight home.
What followed would leave a lasting mark on aviation circles, colleagues, and the wider community.
A Mission That Ended Too Soon
The aircraft, a Beech B200 Super King Air operated by Zeusch Aviation, had just finished a routine medical mission. Among the crew was Maria Fernanda Rojaz Ortiz, a 31-year-old nurse born in Chile with German citizenship. It was her first day in air medical service.
Friends described her as compassionate and driven. “This job was her dream,” one said. “To help people wherever help is needed.”
Moments after takeoff, something went wrong. Witnesses reported the aircraft banking sharply before descending rapidly, followed by smoke rising near the runway.
Witnesses to the Crash
A visitor at the airport, John Johnson, described the moment.
“They waved as they taxied out. Then after takeoff, it tilted left. Seconds later, there was smoke. Everything happened so fast.”
Emergency services responded immediately, but all four onboard were confirmed dead at the scene.
Remembering a Life of Service
Maria’s passing has drawn particular attention as her first flight shift ended in tragedy. Colleagues remembered her as nervous but proud, stepping into a role she deeply believed in.
“She was full of hope that day,” a friend said. “That’s how we’ll remember her.”
The other three victims have not yet been publicly named as authorities work with embassies to notify families.
Investigation Underway
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched a full inquiry into the cause of the crash. The aircraft, widely used in medical and business aviation, was on a return journey after a completed mission.
Officials have urged against speculation while technical analysis is ongoing.
A Community in Mourning
Southend Airport temporarily suspended operations following the incident. Flights were diverted, and investigations began immediately on site.
Local leaders described the emotional impact on the community, especially following other recent tragedies in the area. Counseling and support services have been made available for those affected.
Flowers have since been placed near the airport in memory of those lost.
