While sorting through his belongings, we found a heavy, unfamiliar object covered in dust. It didn’t look modern, but it felt purposeful—clearly something once used and valued, though we couldn’t guess how.

After some research, we learned it was a “fid,” a traditional maritime tool sailors used to separate rope fibers, untangle knots, and splice lines at sea.

That discovery transformed it. What seemed like a random object became a piece of history—we could picture it in use on rough waters, essential for survival. It was a reminder that without context, meaning fades, and even the simplest items can carry stories we’ve forgotten.
