Working in the same hospital as my father always felt comforting. He had been a respected nurse there for nearly thirty years, while I worked in social services. During busy days, we’d sometimes pass each other in the hallway and share a quick hug—a simple way of saying, “I’m here. Keep going.”
For years, no one thought anything of it. Then a new nurse saw us hugging and misunderstood the situation. She casually mentioned it to someone else, and soon rumors spread that my father and I were behaving inappropriately.
The atmosphere at work changed overnight. Coworkers avoided us, conversations stopped when we entered rooms, and eventually we were called into a meeting with our supervisor and HR.
