The evening flowed effortlessly, filled with easy laughter and meaningful conversation. I felt completely present with Claire, disconnected from the outside world. Wanting the night to last longer, I ordered coffee as we finished dessert.
Then the server brought the check.
I paid with my card without thinking, but minutes later the server returned quietly. “I’m sorry, sir, your card didn’t go through.”
