I Got Engaged to a ‘Perfect’ Woman – When I Met Her Parents for the First Time, I Canceled the Wedding

I thought I had found the perfect woman. Olivia was supportive, fun, and everything I wanted in a partner. We met at a concert, fell in love fast, moved in together, and got engaged within a year. I honestly believed we were building a future together.

Then I met her parents.

At what was supposed to be a happy engagement dinner, her father explained that after marriage, I would fully support Olivia so she could quit her job. Then her parents added that I should also give them a monthly allowance and eventually buy a bigger house with a room for them.

At first, I laughed because I thought they were joking.

They weren’t.

What shocked me even more was that Olivia completely agreed. She acted like these expectations were normal and said I should feel honored to provide for the family.

That’s when I realized they weren’t talking about a partnership. They were talking about a financial arrangement, and I was expected to fund it.

On the drive home, I made the hardest decision of my life.

I ended the engagement.

Olivia accused me of overreacting, but deep down I knew I was making the right choice. Months later, I heard her parents were far more upset about losing financial security than losing me.

The experience taught me something important: love should be built on respect, honesty, and shared effort — not pressure, obligation, or unspoken financial expectations.
