Tiny mites called Demodex may be living in your eyelash follicles right now, feeding on oil and dead skin. It sounds disturbing, but it’s actually very common and most people never notice them.
Problems happen when the mites multiply too much, often due to aging, weak immunity, or poor eyelid hygiene. This can lead to redness, itchy or swollen eyes, flaky buildup around lashes, burning sensations, dry eyes, and even eyelash loss.
The two main types are:
- Demodex folliculorum — lives in eyelash follicles
- Demodex brevis — lives in oil glands and feeds on sebum
The good news: they’re usually manageable with simple care. Washing your face daily, removing eye makeup before bed, and keeping eyelids clean can help control them. Doctors may also recommend special lid cleansers or tea tree treatments for severe cases.
Despite the horror-style wording, these mites are a normal part of human skin and not a sign of poor hygiene. The goal isn’t to eliminate them completely — just to keep their numbers balanced so they don’t cause irritation.
