When the narrator was five, his mother abandoned the family, leaving his father to raise him alone. His father worked four exhausting jobs and sacrificed everything to provide for him, yet they remained poor. As the boy grew up, he became bitter and resentful, comparing his life to that of wealthier children. By his teenage years, he cruelly insulted his father, calling him a failure despite all his sacrifices.
His father never responded with anger, only patience and understanding. Years later, the narrator’s mother returned, now wealthy after marrying a rich man. Tempted by the luxurious life she offered, he left his struggling father behind. Heartbroken, his father simply hugged him goodbye without trying to stop him.
Weeks later, the narrator visited his old home and discovered it nearly empty. A neighbor revealed that his father had suffered a serious car accident and sold most of his belongings to pay medical bills. Overcome with guilt, he rushed to the hospital and apologized for abandoning and mistreating him.
Instead of resentment, his father showed compassion, saying he always believed his son would return. When the narrator asked his mother for help, she coldly refused and demanded he choose between her wealth and his father. He finally understood the difference between material comfort and genuine love.
The narrator stayed by his father’s side throughout his recovery, caring for him and helping however he could. Through this experience, he learned that true love is not measured by money or success, but by those who continue loving and believing in you even after you have hurt them
