Heinz has long been associated with the phrase “57 Varieties,” a slogan that appears on its ketchup bottles and has become part of the brand’s identity worldwide.
The origin dates back to the late 1800s, when founder Henry J. Heinz reportedly saw a shoe advertisement highlighting multiple styles and was inspired to create a similar idea for his own products. At the time, the company already sold more than 60 items, but he chose the number 57 because it sounded memorable and distinctive. It’s also often said that “5” was his lucky number and “7” was his wife’s.
Although it never reflected an exact count of products, the phrase quickly became a powerful marketing symbol. “57 Varieties” came to represent abundance, quality, and recognition, eventually becoming one of the most iconic slogans in food branding history.
