In the coffee-growing region of Vassouras, Benedita became known for her resistance against a system of slavery that sought to take away her freedom and identity. Considered difficult by enslavers because of her strength and defiance, she was passed from owner to owner and judged by her reputation rather than her humanity.
Her life changed when Joaquim Lacerda purchased her at an auction. Although this did not erase the cruelty and injustice of slavery, he recognized her resilience and strength instead of seeing them as faults.
Benedita’s story reflects the courage of countless enslaved people who fought to preserve their dignity, identity, and humanity despite oppression.
