The Johnsons were driving, their car full of chatter and Mila’s giggles. Eric, almost sixteen, struggled with feelings of doubt since the family had their own child now. He worried they might not want him anymore. When they stopped at a gas station, Eric noticed a diner across the road, its sign reminding him of his past. He looked at an old photo of his biological mother, Eliza, but quickly hid it when Mrs. Johnson noticed. Later, by the campfire, Eric’s thoughts returned to the photo and the family’s kindness, though he still felt uncertain about his place with them.
Later that night, Eric left the campsite, drawn to the diner where he met Eliza. She barely acknowledged him, claiming not to have kids, and even took money without paying. Eric, caught by the police, was taken to the station, where the Johnsons had been searching for him. Mrs. Johnson embraced him with relief, proving he still had a place with them.
