Putting aluminum foil in a toilet tank has no established benefit for preventing leaks, removing mineral deposits, or keeping the bowl clean. Although any submerged object displaces some water, a small foil ball is not a reliable conservation device. It cannot restore a worn flapper or repair damaged components, either. Loose material could interfere with moving parts or prevent a valve from sealing properly, potentially creating the very water waste the trick promises to stop.
The appeal is understandable: nobody wants another chore or an expensive repair. But dependable improvements start with identifying the actual problem. Check a running toilet for a worn flapper, an incorrectly adjusted float, or other faulty parts, and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. Use appropriate cleaning products as directed, and ask a plumber about persistent leaks. For meaningful water savings, consider an efficient toilet rather than an improvised tank addition. A viral promise is not proof.
