Since I was a kid, I’ve been terrified that something was hiding under my bed at night. The idea of a mysterious presence lurking in the dark filled me with fear, so I decided to get help and visited a psychiatrist to share my worries.
With a comforting smile, he said, “Trust me for a year—come see me three times a week, and we’ll get rid of those fears.”
I asked, “Okay, but what’s the cost?”
“$80 per session,” he replied.
I paused and said, “I’ll think it over and come back if I need to.”
Six months later, I ran into him on the street. He asked, “Why didn’t you follow up about your fears?”
I laughed, “$80 a session, three times a week, for a year—that’s a lot! A bartender cured me for just $10. I was so thrilled with the savings, I even bought a new SUV.”
Curious, he asked, “How did a bartender manage that?”
I grinned, “He told me to saw off the bed legs—now, there’s nobody hiding under there!”
This story shows how sometimes the simplest, even silly, solutions can help us conquer our fears—reminding us that humor can be a powerful way to face what scares us.
