In Her Letter to Santa, My Daughter Asked for ‘The Same Heart-Shaped Earrings Dad Gave to My Nanny’ — I Went Pale

I’m Dorothy, and Christmas is my favourite time of year. My husband, Jerry, and I have an eight-year-old daughter, Ruth. Each December, Ruth writes a letter to Santa and places it in the freezer, believing that’s how mail reaches the North Pole.

This year, Ruth asked for heart-shaped earrings like the ones our nanny, Gloria, wears. Confused, I discovered Jerry had given Gloria these earrings, a gift from his late best friend, Brian, who had asked Jerry to look after Gloria after his passing.

Jerry had been fulfilling Brian’s wishes by giving Gloria gifts for special occasions. I was upset he hadn’t shared this sooner. Gloria hadn’t mentioned it either, not wanting to cause trouble.

We explained the situation to Ruth, and on Christmas morning, she received her own heart-shaped earrings from Santa. The earrings symbolised love, promises, and the strength of our family.
