Emily couldn’t recall when it started — maybe right after their wedding, or after Danny was born — but Rick’s constant criticism turned their home into her nightmare. Her cooking was never good enough, towels are “childishly” folded, and she felt worthless. Her mother urged her to appreciate Rick, but only her friend Marie knew the truth. Every time Emily tried to leave, Rick threatened to take Danny, and she stayed.
On her 36th birthday, hoping for a small celebration, Emily was handed a mop instead of a meaningful gift, with a note reminding her to “know your place.” Humiliated, she scrubbed the floors while Rick mocked her.
The next morning, Emily came home to find a gorgeous car with a red bow and a note: “Never let anyone make you feel small. You deserve more.” The giver was Aaron, her former foster care mentee, now a lawyer. He promised to protect her and Danny from Rick.
