The Surinam toad (Pipa pipa) is truly fascinating with its unique characteristics! It’s also called the “armor-plated toad” due to its rough, bumpy skin which helps it blend into its environment. Its reproductive strategy is particularly incredible: the female carries fertilized eggs on her back, where they develop into tadpoles in special pockets. When ready, the fully-formed young toads emerge directly from her skin.
