On my way to the hospital, I was ecstatic, knowing I’d be bringing my girls home today.
I waved at the nurses as I rushed to Suzie’s room, but when I entered, I froze. My daughters were asleep, but Suzie was gone. I found a note: “Goodbye. Take care of them. Ask your mother WHY she did this to me.”
A nurse entered with paperwork. “Where’s my wife?” I asked urgently.
“She checked out this morning,” the nurse said. “She said you knew.”
I left the hospital in a daze, clutching my daughters and the note. Suzie was gone, leaving only a cryptic message and shattered plans.
My mom, Mandy, was on the porch, holding a casserole. “What’s wrong?” she asked, confused. I handed her the note. “What did you do to Suzie?”
“I don’t know what this is about,” she responded. “She’s always been emotional.”
“Don’t lie to me!” I shouted, furious. “You’ve always undermined her!”
That night, I found a letter from Mom to Suzie, calling her unworthy of me and telling her to leave. Enraged, I confronted Mom, demanding to know why she’d bullied Suzie all these years.
Her face went pale as she saw the letter. “Ben, listen—”
“No!” I yelled.
