We asked my in-laws to look after my dad’s house while we went on vacation. My dad is a kind man with a long-term illness that requires a calm routine, which we explained in detail. They agreed, but as soon as we left, they threw loud parties, ignored his schedule, and insulted his lifestyle. Worst of all, they suggested he should move into a nursing home.
My dad stayed calm but told them, “Maybe it is time I moved out—could you help me pack?” They happily began sorting his things. Two days later, they answered the door expecting movers but found a lawyer and notary instead: my dad had changed his will and left the house to a charity for people with disabilities. Their hopes of inheriting it were gone.
He then moved to a great assisted living community and is thriving. My in-laws haven’t spoken to us since—and we’re fine with that.
