My son’s fiancée tried to steal my ring.
I’m 48, and my son Mark (22) has been with his fiancée, Emily, for two years. I always liked her — smart, ambitious, and seemingly perfect for our family. That changed after they got engaged.
I’ve spent years collecting and designing rings. Each piece in my collection has deep personal and emotional value. So when Mark proposed, I secretly designed a custom ring just for Emily, pouring my heart into every detail.
I invited them over for a celebratory dinner and presented the ring, excited to see her reaction. Instead of joy, she frowned and said, “It’s fine.”
Then she pointed at the emerald ring on my finger — a family heirloom — and said she wanted that one instead.
I was stunned. The entitlement was shocking, especially after she’d dismissed the ring I made for her. I stepped away to collect myself, hoping I’d misunderstood.
When I returned, she snapped, “Are you kidding me? I want that ring now!”
My son looked horrified. And in that moment, I knew nothing between us would ever be the same.
