I was the “fat girlfriend” my ex dumped for my best friend. On their wedding day, his mom called me and said, “You don’t want to miss this.”
I’m Larkin, 28. I’ve always been the big girl, so I learned to be easy to love — funny, helpful, reliable. If I couldn’t be the prettiest, I’d be the most useful.
I dated Sayer for almost three years. We talked about a future. My best friend Maren was part of our life — until six months ago, when I found them in my bed together.
When I confronted him, he didn’t apologize. He said Maren was thin, beautiful, that it mattered. Then he told me I hadn’t taken care of myself and he deserved someone who “matched” him.
They got engaged fast.
I hit rock bottom and changed my life — not for revenge, but to survive. I started walking, then running, then lifting. I cried in gym bathrooms. Slowly, the weight came off. So did the voice telling me I wasn’t enough.
Today was their wedding. I wasn’t invited. I planned to stay home.
Then Sayer’s mother called and begged me to come to the venue.
The place was chaos. Chairs overturned. The wedding was off. Maren had been cheating too — bragging about using Sayer for the ring. She’d walked out in her dress.
Then his mom looked at me and said, “You always loved him. You’re beautiful now. You match him. You could marry him today.”
That’s when I realized who I was to them.
A backup plan.
I said no and walked out.
That night, Sayer showed up at my door. Told me I looked incredible. Said we could fix this — that now I was someone he could choose.
I told him six months ago I might have said yes. But losing weight didn’t make me worthy — it just made it easier to see who wasn’t.
I told him I deserved better.
Then I closed the door and locked it.
