He’s Just a “Better Cultural Fit”

I’d been working 60-hour weeks while Dan coasted, yet when a promotion opened, it went to him because my boss said he was a “better cultural fit.” Then HR accidentally forwarded me an email from my boss calling me “someone like her” who didn’t fit the image.

For three years, I’d covered projects, stayed late, and done the work. Dan was easygoing, charming, and got the promotion—not because he was better, but because he was easier to manage.

The email shook me, but a conversation with Dan revealed he’d also seen a message showing he wasn’t technically as strong. Neither of us had really “won.”

I stayed professional and helped him when he struggled with a client presentation. The client recognized my leadership and skill. Soon after, HR reviewed the promotion process, called out biased language, and reopened the role with transparent criteria. Martin, our boss, was removed from decision-making.

Dan and I both applied. I got the promotion; Dan received a role that truly suited him. My raise let me help my mom with her medical bills.

The lesson: “Not the right fit” often means “I’m uncomfortable with your competence.” But integrity, skill, and persistence surface eventually. Injustice can become the thing that elevates you.
