If your private parts smell fishy, it’s something you should be aware of

Many women notice a fishy odor from their private parts, which isn’t always a cause for concern. Sometimes, simply wearing clean underwear after bathing restores the natural scent.

Persistent odor, especially with itching, pain, or unusual discharge, may signal bacterial vaginosis, a common infection caused by an imbalance of vaginal bacteria, or a sexually transmitted infection like trichomoniasis. Tampons left in too long can also cause strong odors. These conditions need medical treatment.

Prevention includes good hygiene (gentle cleaning with warm water, avoiding douching), wearing cotton underwear, practicing safe sex, and avoiding scented soaps or feminine products. Probiotics may help maintain healthy vaginal flora if approved by a doctor.

If unusual odor persists, consult a gynecologist.
