The disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of journalist Savannah Guthrie, has become a nationwide investigation. While she remains missing, 45-year-old Derrick Callella of California was arrested for allegedly sending ransom-style Bitcoin messages to the family during their public plea for help. Prosecutors say he admitted following the case and contacting them just to see if they would respond. He now faces federal charges.
Authorities stress Callella is not tied to Nancy’s actual disappearance. She was last seen at her Tucson home between January 31 and February 1. Investigators found signs of forced entry and blood inside. Her wallet, phone, car, and vital medication were left behind. Because she requires daily medical care and is not prone to wandering, officials are treating the case as a criminal abduction.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage, digital records, and tips, while her family has publicly pleaded for credible proof of life. As of February 9, 2026, Nancy remains missing, and the search continues.
