On a flight back home, I never expected to meet someone who would become an integral part of my life. It all began with a crumpled note with cash, leading to a lasting connection.
As I boarded the plane, I noticed a nervous boy, around ten, sitting alone beside me. I assumed his parent was nearby, but as the flight started, it became clear he was by himself. He fidgeted, uncomfortable and shy, so I kept to myself until he handed me a note with a $10 bill. The note explained that he had autism, and his mother was waiting for him at the destination. She asked for patience and understanding during the flight.
I immediately texted her to reassure her that he was okay. As the flight continued, I kept him engaged, answering his questions and even getting him a snack. By the end of the flight, he was more relaxed and even chatted about his favorite games.
When we landed, I helped him find his mother, Diane, who expressed her gratitude. Our connection felt instant, and after a brief conversation, I asked if she’d like to grab coffee sometime. She agreed, and over time, I got to know her and her son, Elliot.
Two years later, that nervous boy is now my stepson, and Diane is my wife. What started with a simple note and $10 changed my life forever!
