Hospitals are meant to feel safe, which made the March 20, 2025, shooting at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital especially shocking. What began as a normal morning turned chaotic when gunfire erupted in the parking garage, sending patients and staff scrambling for safety.
At 7:08 a.m., security reported shots fired. Patients froze or ran for cover while employees hid behind cars or rushed inside. Staff immediately activated active-shooter protocols, locking rooms and moving patients to safer areas.
Police quickly secured the campus, searching with drones and K-9 units as the hospital became an emergency zone. Investigators later confirmed the shooting was a targeted conflict between two employees. A 25-year-old employee was shot twice in the arm, and the suspect was arrested nearby after fleeing.
Patients and workers described hiding in closets, locking doors, and waiting in fear for updates. The idea that violence could reach a hospital deeply shook staff, patients, and the surrounding community. Nearby schools also increased security precautions.
Although hospital operations eventually returned to normal, the incident exposed how fragile safety can feel. It also highlighted the importance of preparedness, resilience, and support in helping a community recover from trauma.
