The man was panicked, gripping the wheel tightly. He told me his daughter Emily was in the hospital facing serious complications during childbirth, and the medical staff had called him to come right away. He said she had no one else—just him.
He wasn’t trying to avoid a ticket. He was trying to reach his daughter in time.
Traffic was heavy, and even without a citation, he likely wouldn’t make it through on his own. After getting approval from dispatch, I had him follow my patrol car with lights and sirens as I cleared the road ahead.
We reached the hospital quickly, and he rushed inside without hesitation.
